 Jesus, speaking to his critics, said that there was a fundamental
problem with their study of the scriptures. He said in John
5:39 & 40, "You diligently study the Scriptures
because you think that by them you possess eternal life.
These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse
to come to me to have life." When Jesus speaks of
eternal life, he is referring to much more than life in Heaven.
Eternal life refers to a quality of life, here and now, that
death cannot destroy, the grave cannot end, and Hell cannot
threaten.
Jesus said in John 10:10, "I have come that they
may have life and have it to the full." In John
17:3 he said, "This is eternal life: that they
may know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom
you have sent." No matter who we are, the closer
we are to Jesus, the closer we are to life. The more we
know him, the fuller our lives become.

I give them will never thirst. Indeed the water I give him
will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal
